As well as provision of assessment and therapy services, here at The Psychology Place we offer support in the form of consultation meetings and indirect support to family and professionals in meeting the mental health or emotional / psychological needs of children or young people. The aim of this approach is to help referrers gain a better understanding of the issues from a psychological perspective and to offer support in the form of for example therapeutic parenting, non-violent resistance therapy/NVR, or application of other relevant parenting strategies and ideas. Issues that may be best dealt with in this way may include:

  • Challenging Behaviours / Behaviour difficulties
  • Attachment Difficulties
  • Mental Health Problems where direct work is not indicated or possible

Residential settings
Dr Wilson has considerable experience of working with children and young people in residential environments and can offer support and consultation to the residential staff and/or direct work with the child. We offer packages of training and therapeutic consultations to suit your needs. Please contact us to discuss requirements and organise this bespoke Psychological input.

Professionals may bring a variety of issues to a consultation and sometimes the most helpful intervention is for the professionals around the family to have the opportunity to broaden their thinking and reflect on their work. Questions that professionals often bring to consultations include:

  • What is underlying this child’s difficult behaviour within the family and how can we support child/carer/parent?
  • What needs to happen to prevent a placement breakdown?
  • How can we promote the emotional wellbeing of this child?
  • What are the needs of this child and what ideas do we have to meet them?
  • Discussion around new ideas and interventions, what has been tried before, how can we help things progress?
